Those Fussy Weeks? Your Baby Is Leveling Up. Let’s talk the Wonder Weeks. TM

Jump to:

You know the feeling. One week your baby is an angel. The next week someone clearly swapped them overnight. Fussier. Clingier. Naps are all over the place right when you started to feel a rhythm emerging.

I talk about Wonder Weeks TM in our Newbies group and our Cuddlers group often, because the research behind it is solid and it explains so much. Around predictable times, your baby makes a mental leap. New skills come online. Their whole world shifts. The app shows these weeks as cloudy on the timeline, and yes, it feels stormy.

But I want to reframe the forecast. Those cloudy weeks are not setbacks. They are progressions. It is like finals week in college: not eating normal, not sleeping normal, hyper focused on one thing, and then you come out the other side accomplished. Same for your baby. Their neurons are being rewired.

Here are the first four leaps, what you might see, and the sweet part waiting on the other side.

Leap 1, around 4 to 5 weeks: the world of sensations. One week your baby sleeps through the vacuum. The next week a sneeze startles them mid nap. Their senses just turned on and everything got louder, brighter, and more interesting. The sweet part: deeper eye contact. Your baby is meeting you for the first time, again, and actually seeing your face.

Leap 2, around 7 to 8 weeks: the world of patterns. Suddenly the ceiling fan is the most fascinating thing in your house. Your baby stares at it like it personally owes them an explanation. They are finding patterns in everything: light and dark, your voice going up and down, and those two weird starfish attached to their wrists. The sweet part: first coos. Those little "ah" and "eh" sounds are your baby's opening lines. It is their first conversation with you.

Leap 3, around 11 to 12 weeks: the world of smooth transitions. Before this, your baby saw the world like a slideshow. Now it flows. Movements get smoother, they track you across the room, and their voice starts sliding up and down like a tiny siren. The sweet part: the first real social smile. Not gas. Eye contact and a grin that is absolutely for you. I promise you will never get tired of earning that smile.

Leap 4, around 14 to 19 weeks: the world of events. This is the big one, and it is the real story behind the famous four month sleep regression. Your baby just figured out cause and effect. Shake the rattle, it makes noise. Drop the toy, dad picks it up. Drop it again. He picks it up again. This is not your baby being difficult. They just discovered the best game ever invented. Meanwhile their sleep is consolidating into more adult like cycles, so nights get chaotic. I tell parents it is like rebooting a computer, you wait for everything to come back online. The sweet part: intentional reaching. Your baby grabs what they want on purpose now. Watch their face when they do it. Pure pride.

When you attend a support group, you may sit next to a mom who is two weeks ahead of you and she says, last week was brutal and this week is completely different.

Newborn development is not linear. It is a path with bumps, and the bumps are so much easier with people who just walked them.

That is what our Newbies group and our Cuddlers group are for. Come as you are, fussy baby and all, to our North Phoenix studio. Bring your questions about the week you are in. Leave knowing what is coming next.

Check our schedule and come hang out with us this week. We would love to see you.
